Department
Digital Identity and Access
Runs Commonwealth ID, the single verified account people use to sign in to public services, and sets the rules for how services check who someone is.
What this directorate does
Digital Identity and Access exists so that a person proves who they are once, to one organisation, and can then use any public service that needs to know. Before Commonwealth ID, someone applying for a licence, checking a record, and registering a business held three separate accounts and proved their identity three times.
The directorate operates the identity platform itself, the verification routes that sit behind it — including the in-person route at Commonwealth Service Points — and the assurance framework that tells a department how confident it can be in an account.
Responsibilities
- Operating Commonwealth ID and its supporting verification services
- Publishing the identity assurance framework departments build against
- Approving departmental integrations with Commonwealth ID
- Running the in-person identity route for people who cannot verify online
- Investigating and responding to identity fraud reported by departments
