Commonwealth ID is only required for services that have to confirm who you are. Guidance, publications, and news are open to everyone.

Available. Average sign-in time is under 30 seconds.

Who can use this service

  • Anyone aged 16 or over with a Commonwealth address
  • People living outside the Commonwealth who hold a Commonwealth passport
  • Company directors and agents acting for a registered business

Before you start

You will need one photographic identity document — a passport, driving licence, or Commonwealth identity card.

You will need an email address and a mobile number you can receive messages on.

Verifying online takes about 10 minutes. If you cannot verify online, you can book an appointment instead.

How to use this service

  1. Create your account

    Enter your email address and choose a password. We send you a code to confirm the address belongs to you.

  2. Verify your identity

    Photograph your identity document and take a short video. Most people are verified within two minutes; some checks are reviewed by a person and take up to two working days.

  3. Set up a second step

    Choose how you confirm it is you when you sign in — a text message, an authenticator app, or a security key. You can add more than one.

  4. Use your account

    Sign in to any service that shows the Commonwealth ID sign-in button. You will not need to prove your identity again.
